Early May was the first time InterCloud participated in the AWS Summit Madrid as a sponsor. Our team was delighted to attend this major Spanish cloud event alongside our customers and partners! We were also pleasantly surprised by booth visitors’ sheer interest in our software-defined cloud connectivity platform.
As introduced by Miguel Alava, Managing Director of AWS, the traction of cloud transformation within Spanish businesses is huge. One of the first testimonials was offered by the global energy solutions provider CEPSA: “Thanks to this platform [AWS], companies big and small, as well as entrepreneurs are able to make their dreams come true”, commented CEPSA’s CDO, Joaquin Abril-Martorell.
He explained how CEPSA was becoming a data-driven company using AWS solutions for its data lake. An estimated 15% of the energy provider’s value will come from its data by 2020. Within a year and half of digital transformation, the oil and gas company can boast 48 projects, 2% energy savings and an increased throughput.
Infrastructure cost savings
MAPFRE is another AWS success story; the largest Spanish insurance company and first insurer in Latin America has transformed by adopting the Cloud. Its journey started in 2010 when it needed to:
- supplement its three data centers in Spain in Sao Paulo (Brazil), Florida and Miami;
- use high-performance computing sporadically;
- benefit from flexible development environments for sales management insurance policy applications.
Mai-Lan Tomsen Bukovec, VP and General Manager, Amazon S3, shared that by migrating to AWS, MAPFRE saved almost 10 million € in infrastructure costs.
Intercloud being a cloud connectivity expert, we witness every day the challenges met by multinationals to seamlessly interconnect cloud resources in a fast, secure and reliable way. Our platform allows AWS customers to privately interconnect from end-to-end on-premise and AWS resources using the AWS Direct Connect service.
For instance, a media company leverages the InterCloud platform to extend the elasticity of the AWS Cloud to an agile network. This TV channel is developing a Video On Demand application. In terms of network, it needed to interconnect resources between AWS and its database for video streaming hosted on-premises.
The first use case is traffic segmentation: ensure full isolation of the data flows to and from the five application environments corresponding to 5 VPCs with InterCloud’s end-to-end private connectivity using AWS Direct Connect. The second one is to facilitate data migration to the Cloud: temporarily scale up bandwidth during the migration and scale it down once completed to control network costs.
Walk the talk
Whether it is the biggest insurer or a major TV company, what strikes me is that we see large companies moving to the Cloud. AWS counts tens of thousands active customers and they can now count on blue chip companies in Spain. There is no doubt that global cloud providers such as AWS have a great impact on supporting adoption and maturity of the Spanish market. That’s what Miguel Alava reminded at the end of his keynote: “when others just talk, we walk the talk”.
See you there next year!
